Driver Requirements and Verification

The person at the wheel matters more than any slogan about safety. This page sets out the requirements that apply to drivers of passenger-carrying vehicles and how a driver's currency is checked, framed as the standards that apply and are verified, not as a claim that removes your ability to ask.

The Requirements That Apply

Correct licence class

Driving a bus or coach requires the appropriate heavy-vehicle licence class for that vehicle. Minibuses and larger coaches can fall into different classes, so the requirement is that the driver holds the class matching the vehicle assigned to your job.

Passenger-transport driver authority

Carrying paying passengers requires the passenger-transport driver authorisation that applies in the relevant jurisdiction, which is separate from an ordinary driving licence. The requirement is that the driver holds current authority for the work being performed.

Fatigue management

Driver hours for longer and commercial journeys are governed by fatigue-management rules. The requirement is that trips are planned and driven within those limits, and that a fatigued driver stops rather than continues, which is why a relief or reschedule process exists.

Working With Children Check for school work

Where a driver's work involves school students, a current Working With Children Check applies. The requirement is that this clearance is in place for that work; see the school note below for how we treat it.

How Requirements Are Checked

  • We treat these as requirements to be confirmed for the driver assigned to your job, not as a blanket claim that every possible driver is pre-cleared for every kind of work.
  • For a booking with specific requirements, such as school transport, you can ask us to confirm that the assigned driver meets the applicable authority and clearance requirements before the service runs.
  • Where a partner operator supplies the driver, that operator is responsible for the driver's licensing, authority and clearances, and we confirm on request that these requirements apply to your work.
  • Currency matters: licences, authorities and clearances expire, so what we confirm is current status for your booking rather than a one-time check made at some point in the past.

School work

For school work, a current Working With Children Check applies to the driver. We frame this as a requirement that must be met for that work and confirmed for the assigned driver on request, rather than stating that every driver already holds one. If your booking involves students, tell us so the correct clearance is confirmed before the service runs.

Driver Requirements and Verification: Questions

Can't find it? Call 1300 161 646.

What licence does a bus driver need?

The appropriate heavy-vehicle licence class for the vehicle being driven, which can differ between a minibus and a larger coach. The requirement is that the assigned driver holds the class matching your vehicle; we can confirm this applies for your booking on request.

Is a normal driving licence enough to carry passengers?

No. Carrying paying passengers also requires the passenger-transport driver authorisation for the relevant jurisdiction, which is separate from an ordinary licence. The requirement is that the driver holds current authority for the work.

Do your drivers have Working With Children Checks?

For school work, a current Working With Children Check is a requirement, and we confirm it is in place for the assigned driver on request. We state it as a requirement to be met and verified rather than claiming every driver already holds one regardless of the work.

How do you manage driver fatigue on long trips?

Longer and commercial journeys are planned and driven within the fatigue-management rules that apply, and a fatigued driver stops rather than continues. That is why a relief-driver or reschedule process exists as part of how the booking is run.

Can you confirm the driver's credentials before my booking?

Yes. For bookings with specific needs you can ask us to confirm that the assigned driver meets the applicable licence, authority and clearance requirements before the service runs. Where a partner supplies the driver, that operator holds those obligations and we confirm they apply on request.

Need Supporting Documents?

The team can provide current evidence on request before you book.
